WKSU Focuses on Food Insecurity With Annual Hunger Challenge

WKSU will welcome representatives from the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank and СƬƵ’s Campus Kitchen to its studios on Wednesday, Nov. 28, for its 22nd Annual Hunger Challenge. Food insecurity continues to be a major issue for people throughout Northeast Ohio. WKSU’s Hunger Challenge gives food banks a platform to share information about disadvantaged people in our communities.

This unique day of public radio fundraising allows WKSU donors to choose meals instead of mugs as their thank-you gift for being a WKSU member. The Hunger Challenge is traditionally the highest single-day fundraising total for WKSU each year. For 2018, WKSU is introducing Refer-a-Friend, giving current members a chance to donate 10 additional meals to the food banks if a friend – or relative or co-worker – they refer becomes a member as well.

“I begin every day with WKSU; it’s one of my main sources for news and information," says Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank President and CEO Daniel Flowers. “The station truly is a community resource, and the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank is beyond grateful for the opportunity to partner together once again for the WKSU Hunger Challenge. The Hunger Challenge helps create awareness about hunger within our community and encourages listeners to get involved. Together, WKSU and the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank can be the difference between hunger and hope.”

Greater Cleveland Food Bank President and CEO Kristin Warzocha adds, “We’re so grateful to WKSU for allowing their donors to choose to give even more to the community – meals that will help so many this holiday season. And to the donors who help us by giving meals, thank you. This campaign is such a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness and fight hunger!”

WKSU’s 22nd Annual Hunger Challenge is sponsored by the J.M. Smucker Co. and Dominion Energy. It is part of a week of fundraising that includes Giving Tuesday and the start of the station’s end-of-year campaign.
