This study aims to test, refine, and expand STREAM™ (Smart Translation Enabling and Aiding Multicultural populations – patent pending), a digital language identifier that distinguishes an unfamiliar spoken language so that an appropriate interpreter can be engaged quickly in an emergency. The STREAM™ tool is designed for use in communities with new or growing populations of refugees or newcomers who may not speak the regional language and where first responders and health care professionals cannot quickly discern the language of these newcomers or refugees. Other scenarios in which this language identifier may be used include remote areas or travel contexts in which various languages are spoken, and people require emergency assistance (e.g., airports, highway travel, refugee camps).
