This chapter explores the pernicious effects of cisgenderism, a form of structural oppression that makes cisgender individuals the norm and positions trans people as misfits in that system, upon the field of higher education and student affairs. Venable, Inselman, and Thuot explore how higher education has been structured to exclude trans student affairs professionals, resulting in varying methods of managing this exclusion. The authors explore collusion with, resistance to, and disruption of institutional cisgenderism and its effects on how trans professionals fit in higher education.
