STUDENT ORGANIZATION CONSTITUTION

ARTICLE I -NAME

The name of this organization shall be: GAMMA IOTA SIGMA, Beta-Nu. The organization is a student organization at С»ÆƬÊÓƵ at Salem.

ARTICLE II – OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the organization shall be:

  1. To promote, encourage, and sustain student interest in insurance, risk management, and
    actuarial science as professions.
  2. To encourage the high moral and scholastic attainments of its members.
  3. To facilitate in interaction of educational institutions and industry through networking and by fostering research activities, scholarship, community service, and improved public relations.

ARTICLE III – MEMBERSHIP

Any actively enrolled С»ÆƬÊÓƵ student in good academic standing who is majoring in insurance studies or has complete three or more hours of insurance related coursework is eligible to be an active member and may hold office.

ARTICLE IV – FACULTY ADVISOR AND CHAPTER OFFICERS

1. Faculty Advisor
a. The Dean of С»ÆƬÊÓƵ-Salem Campus will appoint the faculty advisor each calendar year.
b. The Faculty Advisor shall attend the meetings of the Chapter, aid and advise the Chapter, and shall be responsible for the continuity of records and of other property of the Chapter. The Faculty Advisor shall not be entitled to vote, to hold office, to penalize, or to veto, and shall not be liable for actions taken by the Chapter.

2. Election of Officers.
a. The officers of this organization are president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer.
b. Officers will be elected by written or electronic ballot, with each active member casting a vote. A majority of votes will constitute a victory.
c. Election of officers will take place during the 11th week of the spring semester, to elect the officers to serve the following year.
d. Officers will assume office for the period of one year.

3. Recall of Officers
a. Officers are subject to recall for malfeasance in office.
b. Recall procedures will be initiated at the request of five active members.
c. A hearing will be conducted at a regular meeting for the presentation of evidence from all
concerned parties.
d. A majority of those active members voting in a recall at the end of the hearing is necessary
to remove any officer.

ARTICLE V – VOTING

  1. This constitution and by-laws may be amended by a 2/3-majority vote of those voting, a quorum being present.
  2. Voting on amendments must be conducted after a minimum notice of 2 weeks.

ARTICLE VI – NOT-FOR-PROFIT STATEMENT

This is a not-for-profit organization.

ARTICLE VII – STATEMENT OF NON-DISCRIMINATION

This organization shall not discriminate on the basis of age, color, ethnicity, gender, national origin, disability or handicap, race, religion, sexual orientation. This policy will include, but is not limited to, recruiting, membership, organization activities or opportunities to hold office.

ARTICLE VIII – FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS

A specific member or members, designated by this organization shall be responsible for payment in full of all debts accumulated by the organization not covered by funds on deposit.
National dues in the amount of $30 per member must be remitted to the Grand Chapter annually. 

ARTICLE IX – STATEMENT OF NON-HAZING

This organization will not engage in hazing, participate in hazing, or commit any act that causes or is likely to cause bodily danger, physical harm, or personal degradation or disgrace resulting in physical or mental harm to any fellow student or person attending the institution.

ARTICLE X – STATEMENT OF COMPLIANCE WITH CAMPUS REGULATIONS

This organization shall comply with all university and campus policies and regulations and local, State, and federal laws.

BYLAWS

A required part of the Student Organization Constitution

I. Cabinet

A. President

  1. Coordinates all activities of the organization.
  2. Liaison to University community.
  3. Official representative of organization.
  4. Calls regular and special meetings
  5. Presides at meetings
  6. Prepares agenda for meetings.
  7. Ensure organization participation in the С»ÆƬÊÓƵ Salem Student Government Association.
  8. Will vote only in case of a tie at organization meetings and elections.

B. Vice President

  1. Assumes duties of president, when necessary.
  2. Assists president in coordination activities.
  3. Chair community services and programming committee.
  4. Prepare organization meeting and activity calendar each semester.
  5. Make sure accurate organization information is available to all С»ÆƬÊÓƵ students.

C. Secretary

  1. Maintains accurate and current information of the organization and membership
  2. Assists president and vice-president to coordinate activities.
  3. Keeps accurate minutes of each meeting and forwards copies to officers.
  4. Keeps attendance records for meetings.
  5. Ensure that the chapter’s membership records are maintained accurately with the Grand Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma.

D. Treasurer

  1. Maintains accurate and current account of all organizational funds.
  2. Responsible for dispensing of funds in accordance with goals and programs established by organization.
  3. Ensuring that all required documents are submitted to the С»ÆƬÊÓƵ Salem Business Office and/or the Student Government Association.
  4. Ensure that the chapter remains in good financial standing with the Grand Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma.
II. Meetings

Meetings will be open to all organization active and associate members, faculty, and С»ÆƬÊÓƵ representatives. A notice of at least 2 weeks will be given prior to all meetings. The meetings are to be organized and controlled by officers and active members. The chapter will meet at least one time per month. Day of month, time, and location of the meetings will be determined by the chapter president. All meetings will include the option to participate virtually.
