Quick Tip: Set up a makeup quiz for an individual student
We received a suggestion for this week’s Quick Tip from an instructor who had some trouble setting up a makeup exam this week. When adding the dates for the individual student, she accidentally unassigned the quiz from the rest of the class. This caused her student’s quiz grades to disappear from the Canvas gradebook. The fix was to reassign the quiz to “Everyone” in the quiz settings, which restored all the existing grades. She thought it would be helpful to share this information with faculty so to help others avoid this particular pitfall.
So, as a wrap up to our Canvas Quizzes Quick Tip theme over the last month, we are sharing instructions for how to set up makeup quizzes for individual students. Pay special attention to Steps 4-5 in the Reopen the Quiz section to avoid the issue of disappearing grades!
Canvas Quick Tip: Set up a makeup quiz for an individual student
If a student misses a quiz, or if they need to retake the quiz due to technical difficulties, you can set that up via the quiz settings and/or moderate settings, depending on the circumstances.
Scenario #1: The student needs to take the quiz after the due date/availability end date and has not taken the quiz previously
>> Follow the instructions to reopen the quiz.
Scenario #2: The student needs to re-take the quiz after the due date/availability end date.
>> Follow the instructions to allow a second attempt, and then follow the instructions to reopen the quiz.
Scenario #3: The student needs to re-take the quiz before the due date/availability end date.
>> Follow the instructions to allow a second attempt.
Reopen the quiz for a specific student after the due date (Classic & New Quizzes)
- From the Quizzes or Modules page, click on the name of the quiz.
- For Classic Quizzes: Click the Edit button in the top right. // For New Quizzes: Go to Step 3.
- Scroll down to the Assign to settings. There you will see the existing due date and availability dates assigned to the whole class (“Everyone”).
- Click the +Add button below the existing dates to create a second set of “Assign to” parameters.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure you do not change or remove the “Assign to Everyone” settings. If you do, you will unassign the quiz from the rest of the class and their grades will (temporarily) disappear from the gradebook.
- Enter the individual student’s name in the new “Assign to” field. If you type in the first few letters of the first or last name, Canvas will bring up the name for you to select. You can enter multiple students if they will have the same due/availability dates.
Then input the Due date and the Available From and Until dates to set the window in which the student can take the test. The Due date and Available Until dates can be the same.
- Click the Save button at the bottom to save your changes.
Allow a second attempt for a specific student (Classic Quizzes)
- From the Home/Modules page, click on the name of the quiz.
- Click the Moderate This Quiz link in the Related Items column on the right.
- You will see a list of your students. Click the Edit button (pencil icon) to the far right of the name of the student who needs to re-take the test.
- A dialog box will pop up. Type in the number of additional attempts to grant the student, then click the Save button.
Allow a second attempt for a specific student (New Quizzes)
- From the Home/Modules page, click on the name of the quiz.
- Click the Build button at the bottom of the page.
- Click the Moderate tab in the top left.
- You will see a list of your students. Click the Moderate button to the far right of the name of the student who needs to re-take the test.
- A panel will pop out on the right. Type in the number of additional attempts to grant the student.
- Click the X in the top right of the panel to close it (there is no Save button).
