Quick Tip: Using Turnitin through Canvas

POSTED: Oct. 02, 2023

All faculty and students have access to the Turnitin tool through Canvas.  This tool can be used to identify potential plagiarism, AI-assisted writing, and inconsistencies from what would be found in a typical paper. Turnitin can also be used to help your students check their drafts for issues before final submission.

Step 1:

Assignments that have been created but have no submissions can be edited to add the Turnitin option.  The tool can also be used as a teaching aid to help students see what they may have missed.

Step 2: Customize the Settings

If you are using the assignment as a teaching tool with multiple drafts, do not Index the Submissions. Each attempt will be compared to itself making the plagiarism score extremely high.

Step 3:

A small tab will appear in the gradebook that corresponds to the percentage score.  The entire report can be found from within SpeedGrader.

Step 4:

A high score does not automatically indicate that the student plagiarized the assignment.  Careful review of what is being considered in the report is very important.
