Recording Lectures and PowerPoints

What is the recording class lectures accommodation?

Students whose disability presents significant barriers to their ability to process information, focus in class, or take effective notes may be eligible for an accommodation that permits recording class lectures. This accommodation is intended to provide equal access to the course content and enable students to participate fully in the class. Students approved for this accommodation may record lecture and discussion content that will be assessed through exams, quizzes, or other assignments. 

Students are expected to independently utilize any necessary technology for this accommodation and may use a cell phone, laptop, or other audio recording device as appropriate for the class. The recordings obtained in class are strictly for personal academic use and may not be shared, distributed, or used for any other purpose beyond their own review of course materials. 

In cases where class discussion may cover sensitive topics (such as the person speaking sharing personal or proprietary examples of a concept) that are not part of testable material, instructors may ask that students not record such discussion. If there are questions about what can be recorded, the student and/or instructor should contact SAS to discuss the specific situation. If the instructor believes that a recording accommodation would fundamentally alter their ability to deliver or assess course learning outcomes, they should contact SAS as soon as they receive a course accommodation letter.

What is the PowerPoints accommodation?

Students whose disability presents significant barriers to their ability to process information, focus in class, or take effective notes may be eligible for an accommodation that permits them to have copies of PowerPoints. This accommodation is intended to provide equal access to the course content and enable students to participate fully in the class. Students approved for this accommodation should be provided with copies of PowerPoints or other visual material used in class, even if this material is not shared with other students. Where possible, the materials should be provided electronically and prior to each class session or as quickly as possible after class. 

PowerPoints or other materials obtained under this accommodation are strictly for personal academic use and may not be shared, distributed, or used for any other purpose beyond their own review of course materials. If an instructor posts PowerPoints to Canvas for the entire class, no additional action is needed. If the instructor believes that PowerPoint accommodation would fundamentally alter their ability to deliver or assess course learning outcomes, they should contact SAS as soon as they receive a course accommodation letter.
