Sherwin-Williams (Digital Design)

Grace Powell, Visual Communication Design Major, Advertising Minor

Internship: Sherwin-Williams

Through her digital design internship with Sherwin-Williams in Cleveland, Visual Communication Design student Grace Powell, ’22, has been researching and compiling design audits. Grace says her design coursework prepared her to create visual messages that elevate the company’s digital experience.

In addition to design audits, Grace also has been able to collaborate with the company’s content and merchandising teams to work on designing banners and landing pages for the Sherwin-Williams website. Through the variety of design projects she has been working on at her internship, Grace found the type of design she is most passionate for: digital design.

“I’ve learned that my passion lies with digital design. Before my internship I was mostly print focused. Digital design is very intricate and important in today’s world as a form of communication and expression.”

In addition to VCD courses such as Typography and Graphic Design II, Grace’s advertising minor enabled her to take courses such as Advertising Copywriting and Advertising Storytelling. Grace feels the combination of both her major and minor coursework successfully prepared her for this internship experience.

Advice for interns:

“Make connections with other students, designers, experts, staff, etc. I can’t stress enough how many doors it can open for you. Don’t second guess your capability, put yourself out there and apply to the positions you want. Be it for your internship or post-graduation.”
