This class will begin with an overview of security from one of the industry’s foremost authorities on cyber security.  A review and understanding of cyber security and privacy regulations will leave the student with a solid foundation that the role that risk and trust play in keeping data safe.  The bulk of the course will focus on the application and information development process to ensure that cyber security and privacy regulations, controls, and standards are designed into the solution. This course will equally highlight the pitfalls of failing to design security and privacy into the tools we use to conduct our daily business.

How can augmented reality be used to create innovative new forms of children's literature? In this course, students will respond to this design challenge by collaborating with a co-scheduled Design Innovation course to create an original augmented reality storytelling platform using the Unity Gaming engine. Students will draw on Alma Flor Ada and F. Isabel Campoy archive, housed in the Reinberger Children's Library, for inspiration and will have the unique opportunity to publicly share their final projects in the context of the Virginia Hamilton Conference on Multicultural Literature for Youth.

Isabel Campoy Collection of Multicultural Literature at the Reinberger Children's Library Center represents the combined efforts of their lifetime of work dedicated to promoting peace, cultural awareness and social justice.

In this seminar, students will receive a hands-on introduction to aspects of Linux command line, shell scripting, cloud computing, Linux system administration, and containers.

Today's applications run on complex layers of computing infrastructure. Understanding these different components will help the students reason about and troubleshoot applications and the infrastructure underlying them.

Finally, students will learn how to work with existing containers, create new containers, and deploy containers. The growth of Docker and Kubernetes have made containers a standardized application packaging and deployment mechanism, and thus it is important for students to learn these aspects to be successful in their future careers.

This emerging media & technology seminar course seeks to provide an investigative and experiential learning environment, in which students learn about the platforms and technologies behind Smart Devices, from edge devices to core cloud services through research and hands-on activities. Topics covered include background in “Internet of Things” (IoT), physical sensing, platforms, and security. The course culminates with small teams of students developing a Smart Device and connecting it to a cloud-based IoT service.
