Frequently Asked Questions
-
Where is the Writing Commons located?
We are located on the 4th floor of the Library. Look for the office with the double glass doors.
-
Who can use the Writing Commons?
The Writing Commons is open to all С»ÆƬÊÓƵ students from any campus, in any program, at any level. Graduate consultants are available to assist you during the Graduate Lounge’s drop-in hours (M and TH 1:00-4:00pm) in RM 314 on the Library 3rd floor.
-
How do I schedule a session?
You can schedule a session online through KSU Navigate or using the Navigate360 app for IOS and Android. Appointments can also be made by phone at 330-672-1787 or in-person as consultant availability allows. You may schedule appointments throughout the semester, but are limited to two sessions per day. This "two-sessions-per-day" limitation applies to groups of students working on group projects as well as to individuals working on individual projects. Please bring your С»ÆƬÊÓƵ Flashcard with you to check in for your session. More information about why we use your Flashcard at check-in is available in С»ÆƬÊÓƵ's Flashcard User Agreement.
-
What should I expect to happen during my session?
During your session, you and your writing consultant will work together to accomplish the goals you set at the start of the session. Typically, sessions involve you reading your paper aloud while a writing consultant helps you identify some areas in your writing for revision. Sessions can also be spent brainstorming, learning how to edit, or accomplishing other writing and revising tasks. We can address any writing-related concerns you may have during your session.
-
How long will my session last?
Sessions are scheduled for up to 45 minutes. The actual length will vary according to what you hope to accomplish during the session itself.
-
Does the Writing Commons take appointments or receive online/e-mail requests between semesters?
Unfortunately, the Writing Commons is unable to assist С»ÆƬÊÓƵ students when it is closed. Since we are student run and staffed, the Writing Commons opens and closes following the academic calendar. We try to help as many students as possible but simply cannot do so between semesters when our consultants are not on campus. If you have any questions about our hours, please consult the hours and locations page on the Writing Commons website.
-
How do I let my instructor know I went to the Writing Commons?
You can find a summary of your session under the ‘Appointment Summary Reports’ tab in Navigate. This information can be copy-pasted or screenshot and sent to your instructor at your discretion. We will never share your session details without your knowledge.
-
Can I get help with any writing I bring?
Yes. We will help you with any of your own writing, whether that writing is for a class or not. We cannot, however, work with you on writing you yourself did not produce.
-
Will the Writing Commons write, revise, edit, or proofread my writing for me?
No. Everyone at the university must be confident that students are producing and revising their own material, and we can teach you how to do the work for yourself. The Writing Commons is a consulting and support service, not an editing service.
-
What is your Policy on Using AI in sessions?
Because instructor policies toward AI vary, we as a writing center will use AI in sessions only in accordance with the instructor’s policy as the student has articulated it to us. It is the student’s responsibility to know their instructor’s policy and to communicate accurately with their consultant about that policy. It is the instructor’s responsibility to communicate their policy to their students. Any known AI use in sessions will be documented in the session report, along with a note saying the student told us that use did not violate their instructor’s AI policy. It is our responsibility to tell students that this information will go in the session report before we use AI in a session.
