BeneTip: What is a Qualifying Life Event and How Does This Affect My Benefits?

A Qualifying Life Event is a major change in your life that alters your benefits situation. Some examples include the birth or adoption of a child, a change in marital status, loss of benefits by a spouse/partner or becoming newly eligible for benefits due to a job change.

If you experience a Qualifying Life Event, you have an opportunity to change your benefits elections to better suit your new situation, outside of the annual open enrollment window. However, you must report qualifying event to the Employee Benefits Office and indicate you wish to make the appropriate benefit changes within 31 days of the event.

Read more about Qualifying Life Events on the Life Events and Change of Benefits web page. You can also contact the Employee Benefits Office at 330-672-3107 or benefits@kent.edu for more information.
